Sleep is one of the most overlooked aspects of our daily lives and we often give up hours that we could spend sleeping without batting an eyelid. The truth is, there are so many benefits to be gained from a decent nights sleep and it impacts everything we do. Humans are the only living thing that consciously decides to get less sleep even though there are negative consequences attached such as decreased reaction time, a decline in physical & sexual performance, poorer learning & memory retention and there’s suggestions that less than 7 hours sleep can be linked to cancer due to the reduction of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) being created.
Why We Sleep
Matthew Walker is a professor of neuroscience with a passion for sleep. He’s been on a Joe Rogan podcast, hosted a Google talk, contributed towards pioneering sleep research and has written an incredible book called ‘Why We Sleep’. This book changes your perspective on the concept of sleep and brings a new sense of optimism and appreciation for the daily ritual. In an easy to understand way, Matthew breaks down the benefits of sleeping enough but stresses the point that if we compromise on the quantity and quality of sleep, we could have dire long-term consequences. It’s a must-read and can really be life-changing for some.
